“4 1/2 STARS – Thyestes is thrilling and astounding. The production is a masterpiece of writing, a triumph of staging, and a sublime act of performance.” – Martin Ball, The Age
“Hayloft’s best work yet and one of the highlights of the year. Thyestes is rock ‘n’ roll theatre: confronting, transgressive, uncomfortably hilarious, obscene, horrifying and beautiful.” – Alison Croggon, The Australian (read full review)
“4 STARS – The Hayloft Project is a shining light in Melbourne Theatre… This is a shocking and engrossing – and superbly realised – work.” – Chris Boyd, Herald Sun
“Thyestes is a masterpiece. A piercing, dangerous, and brutally executed interrogation of what tragedy might mean to us today” – Cameron Woodhead (read full review)
At the family table, revenge is a dish best served hot.
Written, designed and constructed within the confines of The Malthouse Theatre’s Tower, The Hayloft Project’s Thyestes intersects the grand mythology of Greek and Roman source texts with a twenty-first century perspective. A contemporary renovation of Seneca’s bloodthirsty revenge play, incorporating Hayloft’s trademark striking design and uncompromising independent sensibility with the resources of The Malthouse company residency program.
Following a string of awards and critical acclaim, Thyestes brings together pivotal Hayloft Project artists for the company’s triumphant return to Melbourne in 2010. Not to be missed.
